The incidence of diabetes in younger people and adults is rising in New Zealand. Maori, Pacific Island and South Asian people are particularly at risk. The younger the onset of diabetes, the poorer the health outcomes are for the person. While treatment for the young and the old is essentially the same and health literacy is vitally important for both health professionals and patients.
